Elderly Woman Dies After Wheelchair Rolls Down Hill Into Ditch During Nursing Home Fire Drill... -

A 94-year-old Alabama woman died after being injured when her wheelchair rolled down a hill and landed in a ditch full of water.

A relative says Elizabeth Street died at a hospital in Decatur on Saturday, three days after she was hurt.

The woman’s son-in-law, Wallace Everett, says Street developed pneumonia after the accident, but a cause of death hasn’t been determined. He says she also suffered from congestive heart failure.

Decatur Fire Chief Darwin Clark tells The Decatur Daily the accident occurred during a fire drill at Country Cottage Assisted Living.

Authorities received a call about a woman falling into a ditch full of water. A caregiver told emergency workers she went outside to discover the woman’s wheelchair had rolled down a hill and into the ditch.

“Our objective now is to better understand what happened, why this happened and what can be done to prevent it in the future,” Everett told The Decatur Daily.

Street was placed in the Country Cottage Assisted Living home after breaking her hip in October 2011.

5-foot-long rat snake found in Texas jail -

5-foot-long rat snake found in Texas jail -

An unwelcome visitor at a North Texas jail has been freed by a reptile-friendly deputy.
Cpl. Mike McNicholas of the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office helped remove the 5-foot-long rat snake from some overhead pipe space.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Monday that an inmate at the county's Greenbay jail facility had spotted the snake above his cell.
McNicholas blamed the nonvenomous snake for the inside job, saying the creature probably got into the jail through exhaust fans or air conditioning ducts. He thinks the snake couldn't get back out and would have starved if not helped.
McNicholas carried the snake to a vacant lot near the jail and freed the critter near a creek.
